Egypt. Temple Of Dandour - NubiaFirst Edition lithograph. Modern colour. Half plate Number 189. Supplied with a sheet of original text. Acid proof mount and backingDated June 1st 1848 - Half plate image 25 x 35 cm. Mounted size 51 x 61 cm David Roberts (1796 - 1864) original full plate lithographs of Egypt were produced from 1842-49. The cost of producing the hundreds of plates was partly offset by subscriptions from the well-to-do including Charles Dickens, John Ruskin, as well as Queen Victoria, the Pasha of Egypt, and Tsar Nicholas 1 of Russia. The first set produced was the Subscription edition with the lithograph carefully hand-coloured. First edition prints have become highly sought after. The Mathaf Gallery, after 30 years of business, still leads the world in 19th century paintings of Arabia, known as Orientalism a market that it pioneered. These aquatints are photographed sealed in a cellophane wrapper with the stock ticket of the Mathaf Gallery affixed. The descriptions are taken from these labels and give a secure provenance to these items and that is the reason for taking the pictures through the wrapping, even though its reflections make the images a little less clear. They are offered at half the Gallery’s prices. Larger image 1 : Larger Image 2 : Larger Image 3 Ref 39005 : £80
