Home Page Buying Maps Books Prints Ephemera

Southern England covers Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Somerset and all English counties to the South. Items are grouped together by county and the counties are in alphabetical order.

Please note that many places we think of as being in London were well outside its boundaries in the nineteenth century and so some London views will be found in the UK Southern England section within Essex, Herts, Kent and Surrey. I have included Middlesex within the London classification.

All our prints are Originals. They are NOT modern reproductions or electronic copies. Images are of the item for sale and may exaggerate blemishes and alter colours. I endeavour to mention any damage. The size given is of the sheet overall, unless otherwise stated, which is the image shown including margins.

Bristol, The City of. As it appeared on Sunday night (time from 6 to 12 o'Clock) 30th Octbr 1831.
From a Scetch (sic) Taken from Brandon Hill, by C. H. Walters. London. John Bysh, 8, Cloth Fair West Smithfield. 435 x 290mm overall. Engraved area 375 x 255mm.
c1831 - 43.5 x 29 cm

Hand coloured aquatint. N.D. When the New Gaol, the Toll Houses, the Bishops Palace, two sides of Queen Square, including the Mansion House, Custom House, Excise Office, Warehouses with various other Buildings & other property. to the Amount of upwards of One Hundred Thousand Pounds Sterling, was totally Destroyed. One of several prints made in the wake of the Bristol Riots of 1831 which took place after the House of Lords rejected the second Reform Bill, which aimed to improve the 'rotten boroughs' and to give Britain's fast growing industrial towns greater representation in the House of Commons. The riots continued for three days during which the palace of Robert Gray the Bishop of Bristol, the Mansion House, and private homes and property were looted and destroyed, along with the demolition of much of the gaol. Work on the Clifton Suspension Bridge was halted and Isambard Kingdom Brunel was sworn in as a special constable. Queen Square was destroyed on the north and much of the west side, but later rebuilt. It was Sir Charles Wetherell, the local magistrate and strong opponent of the Bill, who appeared to open the new Assize Courts on 19th October, who threatened to imprison participants in a disturbance going on outside. The mob turned on him and he was chased to the Mansion House in Queen Square; he later managed to escape in disguise, but the mayor and officials were besieged inside the Mansion House. After all the destruction, four men were hung despite a petition of 10,000 Bristolian signatures, which was given to King William IV. Three marginal repairs which donít reach the printed area; a pale matt burn from an old mount. VERY SCARCE. Uncoloured and trimmed copy with tears is on sale elsewhere at £320.
