Cheshire. Birkenhead. Woodside Abbey Ruins.
Drawn by J. Pennington; wood engravings by H. Hole or Branston. Published serially by Thos Troughton but because it did not pay sold to Wm Robinson for his HISTORY OF LIVERPOOL, 1810. Book and plates now rare.
1806-1808 - 22 x 27 cm

In 1150 Hamon de Massie, who owned a considerable amount of land on Wirral, founded a Benedictine Priory, dedicated to St. Mary and St. James, the remains of which stand today. The priory was built on a headland called Birchen Head, because of the birch trees that grew there, at the head of the River Birket. The area now known as Woodside. The monks farmed land known as the Grange situated where Alfred Road is today. To get there they would walk along Grange Lane, later renamed Grange Road. They took their produce to Liverpool to be sold in the market. They also ferried passengers across the Mersey and it was this ferry that later played a significant part in the development of Birkenhead. This plate was engraved by H. Hole.

Cheshire. Birkenhead. Woodside Ferry.
Drawn by J. Pennington; wood engravings by H. Hole or Branston. Published serially by Thos Troughton but because it did not pay sold to Wm Robinson for his HISTORY OF LIVERPOOL, 1810. Book and plates now rare.
1806-1808 - 22 x 27 cm

View of the Ancient Ferry called Woodside on the Western Shore of the River Mersey. In 1150, the Benedictine Priory at Birkenhead was established. The monks used to charge a small fare to row passengers across the river. At this time, the Mersey was considerably wider with sand dunes and marshes to the north leading up to Ainsdale beach and sandstone cliffs and shorelines to the south near Otterspool. Weather often stopped crossings and passengers were delayed for days, taking shelter at the priory. In 1317, a royal licence was issued, granting permission to the Priory to build lodging houses for men crossing the river at Woodside. The monks of Birkenhead Priory operated a ferry service until the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the priory's destruction by Henry VIII's troops in 1536. Ownership reverted to the Crown, and in 1544 the ferry rights as well as the Priory properties were bought by Ralph Worsley of Lancashire for 586. 11s. 6d. Paper watermarked HS 1806.

Cheshire. Wirral. Hilbre Island.
Drawn by J. Pennington; wood engravings by H. Hole or Branston. Published serially by Thos Troughton but because it did not pay sold to Wm Robinson for his HISTORY OF LIVERPOOL, 1810. Book and plates now rare.
1806-1808 - 22 x 27 cm

View of the Isle of Hilbra (Hilbre), and part of the Welch Mountains with the Middle Eye to its left. View of the Isle of Hilbra (Hilbre), and part of the Welch Mountains. It is believed that the island has been occupied on and off since the Stone Age. It may have been a place of pilgrimage based around the lore of St Hildeburgh. In about 1080AD a cell and church for Benedictine monks was established on the island. Domesday Book mentions Chircheb (West Kirby) having two churches: one in the town and one on an island in the sea. The island became a common place for pilgrimage in the 13th and 14th centuries. At the dissolution of the monasteries two monks were allowed to remain on the island, as they maintained a beacon for shipping in the river mouth. The last monk left the island in about 1550AD as it was no longer considered a sanctuary, having become a centre for commerce and a busy trading port. In 1692 a small factory was set up to refine rock salt. There was also a beer house or inn. With the silting of the River Dee trade switched to ports on the River Mersey and the trade vanished from the island leading to the closure of the beer house; part of the structure of this building remains incorporated in the custodian's residence. Hilbre Island Lighthouse was constructed here in 1927. The most southerly building on the island is now the Hilbre Bird Observatory. This plate is from a drawing by I. Pen and engraved by H. Hole.
