The World in HemispheresJohn Rapkin for The Illustrated World Atlas by John Tallisc1850 - 50 x 42 cm Pair of framed and glazed hand coloured maps showing the world in the two hemispheres, each surrounded by a dozen vignettes, four of natives and eight of animals or birds. The maps appear in very good condition but not examined out of the frames which are generally in good condition except one side of each frame has lost much of its lacquered surface. Overall 50 x 42cm. Mount window 33.5 x 25cm. The Eastern hemisphere shows the mail route from England to India, Ceylon, China and Australia via the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Before the Suez canal opened in 1869 the East India Company started a steam packet service between Bombay and Suez in 1837 using a horse-drawn wagon for the 84 miles across the desert from Suez to Cairo. NOTE: These maps are framed and glazed and will only be sent to UK destinations. This has yellowed with age. The map includes two tables: English Colonial and Missionary Bishoprics and Bishoprics of the American Church from 1783. A very unusual item.
