Vienna (Wien) Panorama
Munster (Sebastian),
c1550 - 79 x 25 cm

Anno Domini 1548. Viena Austriae Hunc Habuit Situm, uncoloured woodcut. Two sheets conjoined (as published). Title in 'ribbon style' cartouche, wide top and bottom margins; narrower side margins. Central fold strengthened on verso. Latin text on verso. Other images available. Published in the 'Cosmographia', Basel, c.1550, the earliest German language description of the world. The final Latin edition was 1572. Wolfgang Lazius, physician, historian and cartographer, supplied this view of his home city as viewed from the north. The date 1548 and initials HRMD appearing at the lower centre and HH to the right, along with their symbols of a dagger and a fish respectively, identify the woodcutters as Hans Rudolph Manuel Deutsch and Heinrich Holzmuller who executed this dramatic town plan. It seems likely that one probably executed the topography, the other the lettering and scrollwork, prominently displayed in the banner extending the full length of the image. Across the top is the description: ‘Vienna Austriae metropolis, urbs toto orbe notissima celebrissimaque, unicum hodie in Oriente contra saevissimum Turcam invictum propugnaculum & fortalicium, expressa ad nostril aeui quam habet figuram’.
