Son of the Morning Star. Custer and the Little Bighorn. The Illustrated Edition of the National Bestseller.
Connell, Evan S.

Book Description: Promontory Press, New York., 1993. Hard covers. Two tone boards. Thick quarto. 441pp + fold out illustrations. Deckle fore-edges. Illustrated Edition. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Slightly sunned edge of front. In Son of the Morning Star, Mr. Connell explores deeply the personalities of Custer and the other federal and Indian leaders. Custer, seen by some as a hero, by others as the cause of the defeat, was an enigmatic and extravagant figure, fearless in battle and sentimental in repose. It is said that on first seeing through field glasses the more than four miles of Allied Indian camps, he exclaimed, hurrah, boys, we've got them! Disregarding a Cheyenne warning, Custer rode to his death--and led to death every man of the Seventh Cavalry who followed him. A foolish miscalculation ended the life of the man the Indians called Son of the Morning Star. The story is told that after the battle a squaw drove a sewing awl through his ear and into his skull so that he might hear better in the next world. Contains superb coloured, double-page gatefolds of classic paintings of Custer’s Last Stand. Bibliography and Index. This edition is very uncommon in the UK.

Essays in a Series of Letters to a Friend.
Foster, John.

Book Description: Published by Gale & Curtis of London and printed in Oxford in 1811, fourth edition. Octavo, xx + 446 pp. This copy is bound in full diced calf with raised bands and a gilt titled label on the spine with gilt rulings and blind decoration, gilt decoration to the boards, marbled endpapers and all edges and the bookbinders label of W. Whereat of Bristol is on the front pastedown. The book unbound was ten shillings and sixpence and binding must have cost twice that sum making this a costly volume. Book Condition: There is damage to the lower spine affecting that part of the front hinge but the book is otherwise firmly bound but the corners are bumped (see images). There is some light foxing, mostly in the first 20 pages. This volume of Essays was published in four editions in England and two in the USA between 1804 and 1811 but continued to be reprinted right through the nineteenth and into the twentieth century and now printed on demand. All early copies for sale are to be found in the United States except for an odd volume of the third edition and this is the only copy of the fourth edition. The four essays in 27 letters comprise I On a Man's Writing Memoirs of Himself, II On Decision of Character, III On the Application of the Epithet Romantic and IV On Some of the Causes by Which Evangelical Religion Has Been Rendered Less Acceptable to Persons of Cultivated Taste. John Foster was the son of a weaver, born in Halifax, Yorkshire, and educated for the ministry at the Baptist college in Bristol, Foster served as a minister for a number of years in various parts of England and Dublin. In 1800 he took charge of a small congregation at Downend, near Bristol, and in February 1804 of one at Sheppard's Barton, Frome, but troubled with ill health his preaching was interrupted and becoming a full-time writer, he contributed nearly 200 articles to the Eclectic Review. His works include Essays, in a Series of Letters, and Essay on the Evils of Popular Ignorance, in which he urged the necessity of a national system of education. In May 1808 he married and went to live at Bourton in Gloucestershire. About a year after he recovered enough to resume occasional preaching, and towards the end of 1817 he again took charge of the congregation at Downend. In 1821 he gave it up and went to live at Stapleton, Gloucestershire. In 1822 he began to lecture fortnightly in Broadmead Chapel, Bristol; at the end of two years poor health forced him to make the lectures monthly, and in 1825, when Robert Halls began his ministry in Bristol, he dropped them. Foster became involved in a controversy between the Serampore missionaries and the committee of the Baptist Missionary Society, strongly siding with the missionaries. In 1836 his health began to give way, and his lungs became diseased. On 15 October 1843, he was found dead in bed. He was buried in the burial-ground attached to the Downend baptist chapel. A contemporary notice of Foster's Essays: I have read, with the greatest admiration, the Essays of Mr. Foster. He is one of the most profound and eloquent writers that England has produced.--Sir James Mackintosh.

The Works of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. Volume II, only.
Johnson, Samuel.

Book Description: Nichols and Son; F. C. and J. Rivington (and many others), London, 1816. A New Edition in Twelve Volumes with an Essay on His Life and Genius by Arthur Murphy Esq. Hardcover, cloth, octavo, 472 pp. Vol 2 only, of 12. All edges marbled. Book Condition: Fully re-bound in brown cloth with a paper label. The old boards have been re-used and the original endpapers are a bit stained. There is a damp stain in the inner margins, most obvious in the later pages but it does not extend to the printed area. A very solid book. This volume opens with an essay on the plan for an English dictionary, a project for which Johnson is rightly famous. It also contains several essays about Shakespeare and his plays running to over 100 pages as well as 55 pages of observations on the Tragedy of Macbeth. This copy is priced to reflect the lack of a leather binding.

Days with Ulanova.
Kahn, Albert.

Book Description: Collins, London, 1962. Introduction by Arnold Haskell. Lemon yellow cloth covers with grey cloth spine. Hardback, dust jacket. xii, 236 pages. 220 x 275 mm. 300 b&w photographs showing many facets of the life of this famous ballerina. This book brings a legend to life. From it emerges the first intimate portrait of Galina Ulanova, prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Ballet. Here, at first hand is the story of how Ulanova lives and works. Here is Ulanova training in class at the Bolshoi Theatre and relaxing with friends at home; shaping the magic of her most celebrated roles and seeking the solitude of her beloved birch groves; nurturing the talent of a young ballerina, meeting with notables of the art world, and on holiday with her husband at a summer dacha. Here are recorded, in her own words, her aspirations and ideals, her views on the dance, her quest to convey the beauty in life and in the human heart. Here too are vivid and fascinating glimpses of the Soviet milieu in which she moves. Book Condition: Good; dust jacket a trifle chipped, not price-clipped, the cloth clean, internally very good with no inscriptions.

Sublime Tobacco.
Mackenzie, Compton.

Chatto and Windus, London, 1957. First Edition. Hard Cover. 352pp and 8 pages of illustrations. Book Condition: Good but very slight staining to cloth (see image). Dust Jacket Condition: Good but a bit frayed; spine faded and back somewhat stained. My price reflects the condition. The prologue, My smoking life, describes the author's adventures with tobacco. There then follows a history of the “weed”, including a description of its cultivation and its social aspects. As the publisher says: Compton Mackenzie smoked his first cigarette at the age of four. With this precocious puff as a starting point he relates his adventures with tobacco from that day to this. His prologue, entitled My Smoking Life, if followed by a history of the fragrant weed. The Stuarts hated smoking, but they were clever enough to realise its potentiality for Revenue. During most of the seventeenth century a miniature civil war went on in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, neither the Stuart Kings nor Cromwell being able to suppress those hardy men of the Cotswolds determined to grow tobacco in England. However, the tale of tobacco is not confined to England. One of the most interesting chapters deals with the success of Glasgow during the 18th century in making itself the tobacco Mart of the World. In Europe and Asia smokers were persecuted for a long time, and the tale of what they had to go through is fully related. The pipe from clay to briar, the defeat of the pipe in fashionable circles by snuff for over a hundred years, the defeat in turn of snuff by the cigar, and finally the rout of pipe, cigar and snuff by millions of cigarettes. All these stirring events are told. Besides the social aspect of tobacco an adequate account of its cultivation is provided. When it is remembered that the foundations of the United States rest upon tobacco, the history of it is a matter of some importance. The book concludes with an Epilogue dealing with the benefit tobacco has been humanity.

Book Condition: Text clean and sound, corners bumped and cloth a little spotted. Caroline Elizabeth Sarah Norton (22 March 1808 – 15 June 1877) was a British feminist, social reformer, and author of the early and mid-nineteenth century. Caroline left her husband in 1836, following which her husband sued her close friend Lord Melbourne, the then Whig Prime Minister, for criminal conversation. The jury threw out the claim; however Caroline was unable to obtain a divorce and was denied access to her three sons. Caroline's intense campaigning led to the passing of the Custody of Infants Act 1839, the Matrimonial Causes Act 1857 and the Married Women's Property Act 1870. Caroline modelled for the fresco of Justice in the House of Lords by Daniel Maclise, who chose her because she was seen by many as a famous victim of injustice. The Lady of La Garaye was the last of 11 collections of poems she published along with five novels and many political pamphlets.

Hutchinson, London, 2000. 219pp plus 16pp of photographs. Softback. Good condition with just a faint stain to lower cover. Who is this Vladimir Putin? Who is this man who suddenly--overnight and without warning--was handed the reins of power to one of the most complex, formidable, and volatile countries in the world? An extraordinary compilation of over 24 hours of in-depth interviews and remarkable photographs, it delves deep into Putin's KGB past and explores his meteoric rise to power. No Russian leader has ever subjected himself to this kind of public examination of his life and views. Both as a spy and as a virtual political unknown until selected by Boris Yeltsin to be Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin has been regarded as a man of mystery. Now, the curtain lifts to reveal a remarkable life of struggles and successes. Putin's life story is of major importance to the world.
